Millerton feels the love at Academy Awards

MILLERTON — It happens fairly often: Someone who has a home in the Tri-state region is honored with an Academy Award. Like forgotten children, area residents often sit by the television, watching that familiar face accept his or her award, waiting and wondering if perhaps there will be mention of Salisbury, Sharon, Millerton.

Usually, there is not.

But screenwriter Charles Randolph broke the streak by giving a shout out to Millerton after winning the award for best adapted screenplay, along with Adam McKay, for the film “The Big Short.”

This year, for the first time, the award winners had apparently been asked ahead of time to write up the list of people they would like to thank. The words ran along the bottom of the screen as they walked from the audience to the stage. At the end of the text list for Randolph and McKay, it said they would like to thank, “the good people of Hudson, Tivoli and Millerton, N.Y.”

A source said on Monday morning, Feb. 9, that Randolph lives in Ancram.

Carol Sadlon, an owner of The Moviehouse in Millerton with her husband, Robert, explained that, “Charles Randolph is a good friend of The Moviehouse. Paramount had a publicity screening of ‘The Big Short’ at The Moviehouse before it opened and he came back, when we opened the film, to do another amazing Q&A. He is a kind and generous person who loves and supports Millerton.

“It was fun to see our town at the Oscars!”

Keep that in mind, Meryl, Kevin, Kyra, Frank and all other past and future winners and nominees. And best wishes for future honors to all the talented people who live here.

While playing outside in the early post-pandemic days, Berkshire Busk! founder Eugene Carr had an epiphany: why not expand the idea of performing on the street (aka busking)into a full-fledged festival in Great Barrington?

As an entrepreneur and cellist, Carr envisioned a well-organized jamboree featuring regional talent, including musicians, acrobats, storytellers, fire-eaters, and more. He formed a team, connected with local businesses and the town of Great Barrington, and launched Berkshire Busk! in 2021. Since then, Berkshire Busk! has grown into a summer staple for Great Barrington.

'Sylvia' brings heart, humor and one unforgettable dog to Sharon Playhouse stage

What if the dog onstage was played by a person? That’s the delightful twist in A.R. Gurney’s “Sylvia,” opening at the Sharon Playhouse on Aug. 29. In this clever and heartfelt comedy, the title character — a stray pup who disrupts the lives of a married couple — is portrayed not in costume but by an actor who brings insight, charm, and chaos to the role.

Stepping into Sylvia’s paws is Jen Cody, who is returning to the Sharon Playhouse in a starring role for her third year in a row, ready to bring this spirited dog to life. She’s joined by Jonathan Walker as Greg, the middle-aged man smitten with his new four-legged friend, and Jennifer Van Dyck as Kate, his wife, whose patience and identity are tested by Sylvia’s sudden presence in their home.
