Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office Harlem Valley area activity report Aug. 7 through Aug. 16

Aug. 8 — Deputies report the arrest of Blanca I. Grajales De Gonzalez, age 57, for Operating Motor Vehicle with Suspended registration as the result of a traffic stop on Main Street in the Village of Millerton.Subject to appear in the Town of North East court at a later date.

Aug. 9 — Deputies responded to 826 Old Quaker Hill Road in the Town of Pawling for a suspicious vehicle parked near caller’s house.Investigation resulted in the arrest of Briana E. Grenier, age 37, for Driving While Intoxicated.Subject to appear in the Town of Pawling Court at a later date.

Aug. 10 — Deputies responded to 139 Charles Coleman Blvd. in Pawling to investigate a reported domestic disturbance.Matter resolved without further police intervention

Aug. 12 — Deputies report the arrest of John W. Higgins Jr, age 56, for Aggrvated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle in the second degree subsequent to a traffic stop at in the area of 3483 Pleasant Ridge Road in Dover.Subject to appear in the Town of Dover Court at a later date.

Aug. 14 — Deputies report the arrest of Luis A. Villarreal-Reyes, age 45, for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle in the second degree, Operating without an Ignition Interlock Device, Unregistered Motor Vehicle and Improper use of license plates subsequent to a traffic stop in the area of 2829 Church St. in Pine Plains.Subject to appear in the Town of Pine Plains Court at a later date.

Aug. 15 — Deputies and numerous Fire/EMS units responded to the Dutchess County Rail Trail in the Town of North East in the area of Rudd Pond for a male down on the ground by a ditch.After the extensive search, the male was found to be tanning.No emergency present.

Backgammon series begins at Hotchkiss Library of Sharon

In light of rising local interest in the centuries-old game of Backgammon, Wednesday afternoon backgammon instruction and play sessions are being offered at The Hotchkiss Library of Sharon. The first such session was held on Wednesday, Aug. 13, attracting two enthusiastic participants, both of whom resolved to return for the weekly sessions.

Expert player and instructor Roger Lourie of Sharon, along with his equally expert wife, Claude, led the session, jumping right into the action of playing the game. Claude chose to pair with Janet Kaufman of Salisbury, a moderately experienced player looking to improve her skills, while Lourie teamed himself with Pam Jarvis of Sharon, who was new to the game.

A giant fish that sold at Trade Secrets, the high-end home and garden show held at Lime Rock Park, is just one of the creatures that Matt Wabrek of Birch Lane Rustics in North Canaan, creates by welding old tools and pieces of metal together.

The fish was so well liked by browsers at Trade Secrets that he received commissions for others.
