Millerton veterans honored

MILLERTON— Veterans, family and community members gathered at Veterans Park on a cold and windy Friday, Nov. 11, to commemorate Veterans Day.

As is tradition since 1927, American Legion Post 178 held its annual ceremony, followed by a light lunch at the Legion hall.

Post Commander Sean Klay thanked attendees for coming and reminded them what the day meant.

“From the Revolution to the War on Terror, each generation of Americans has answered the call to serve in the Armed Forces of the United States,” he said. “Veterans Day is a day to honor those who have returned from our nation’s conflicts and have the honor of having the title of veterans.”

To share some of the experiences encountered by veterans, Klay welcomed World War II veteran George Phillips.

Phillips saw action at the Battle of the Bulge and elsewhere with the 87th Infantry Division, under the command of Gen. George S. Patton in 1944.

Linda Chase was one of many happy to learn his story.

“Today is a day to demonstrate our common bonds for respect of country and gratitude for the unselfish service of so many men and women like Mr. Phillips,” she said. “It was humbling to hear some of his stories.”

The day was filled with gratitude from civilians and veterans. As Marine Corps veteran Stan Chase put it, “It’s important to remember all those who have served. I’m from the Vietnam era,” he said. “It’s nice to know that veterans and their families get far more recognition now than they did back then.”

While playing outside in the early post-pandemic days, Berkshire Busk! founder Eugene Carr had an epiphany: why not expand the idea of performing on the street (aka busking)into a full-fledged festival in Great Barrington?

As an entrepreneur and cellist, Carr envisioned a well-organized jamboree featuring regional talent, including musicians, acrobats, storytellers, fire-eaters, and more. He formed a team, connected with local businesses and the town of Great Barrington, and launched Berkshire Busk! in 2021. Since then, Berkshire Busk! has grown into a summer staple for Great Barrington.

'Sylvia' brings heart, humor and one unforgettable dog to Sharon Playhouse stage

What if the dog onstage was played by a person? That’s the delightful twist in A.R. Gurney’s “Sylvia,” opening at the Sharon Playhouse on Aug. 29. In this clever and heartfelt comedy, the title character — a stray pup who disrupts the lives of a married couple — is portrayed not in costume but by an actor who brings insight, charm, and chaos to the role.

Stepping into Sylvia’s paws is Jen Cody, who is returning to the Sharon Playhouse in a starring role for her third year in a row, ready to bring this spirited dog to life. She’s joined by Jonathan Walker as Greg, the middle-aged man smitten with his new four-legged friend, and Jennifer Van Dyck as Kate, his wife, whose patience and identity are tested by Sylvia’s sudden presence in their home.
