The Millerton News: New intern joins staff

MILLERTON— The Millerton News has taken on another intern from Millbrook High School this past week. Through the high school’s Senior Explore Program, now in its second year, intern Angela Fernandez will be joining the Millerton team.

The Senior Explore Program emphasizes the importance of assimilating high school seniors into the work force and the independence associated with life beyond Millbrook. The primary goal is to give students hands-on experience in a field they either have an interest in or plan on pursuing. For only being in its second year, the high school has accumulated a variety of contacts with businesses from Millbrook all the way to Manhattan, giving students a variety to choose from.

Fernandez, 17, has lived in Millbrook and attended Millbrook Central School District since she was a kindergartner at Elm Drive Elementary School. As this chapter of her life comes to a close, she looks forward to studying English and Global Studies at Colby College in Maine in September

With a packed schedule, Fernandez occupies her time with various clubs and activities. Some of these activities include Model United Nations, Interact Club and editing for her high school’s Yearbook Club. Outside of school, she also spends time volunteer teaching at her church, working at the Millbrook Free Library and exploring Dutchess County.

It is writing that drew Fernandez to pursue an internship at The Millerton News. As an avid writer and poetry enthusiast, she’s new to journalism. It’s something that she has considered pursuing in the future, but hasn’t had the opportunity to delve into until now. It will be an entirely new experience, but she believes it will broaden her scope and abilities as a young writer.

“I’ve been really into writing for as long as I can remember. It’s always been a part of me,” Fernandez said, describing how her passion has evolved over the years. “My creativity has just evolved. I used to try writing short stories, but I’ve been writing poetry for a few years now. I’m such a geek about it, I can’t help but gush when I talk about it. Writing has really just grown up and changed with me.”

She hopes that above all else, her time here will be used to explore; gaining knowledge and insight into local journalism. She’s thrilled to be spending the final portion of her high school career working with The Millerton News and is grateful to the Senior Explore Program coordinators, Frank Fiorenza and Carolyn Hotaling, for making her placement at the newspaper possible.
