Millerton’s Todd Clinton honored by Salisbury Bank

MILLERTON — Todd Clinton, a resident of Millerton, was recognized with the 2016 President’s Award at the Salisbury Bank Snowball on Feb. 25 at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel. 

In addition to Clinton’s recognition, Maria Marrero received the Employee of the Year award, James Kelly was honored with the Rookie of the Year award and Michele LaPlante was presented with the Volunteer of the Year award.

“Sometimes the best awards are the ones that totally surprise you, and it did surprise me,” said Clinton in reacting to the news of his recognition. “I was honored and I was very moved by it. To be singled out certainly is a great feeling from an individual perspective and from considering what you have contributed.”

Described as “hardworking, steadfast and passionate” by President and CEO Richard J. Cantele Jr., Clinton has been a member of the Salisbury Bank team for 30 years. Under his current title as executive vice president and chief risk officer, he manages the bank’s technology division, compliance division, deposit operations and risk management. Clinton also belongs to a  number of organizations related to his work, such as the technology committee of the Connecticut Bankers Association.

Among the responsibilities of his position, Clinton emphasized the importance of managing the Information Technology (IT) infrastructure as well as the security of the bank’s network. He said that he also works to ensure that the bank’s delivery channels are up and running so that customers can access their accounts through online and telephone banking.

According to a statement made by Salisbury Bank, Clinton played a significant role last year in leading the bank’s major system enhancement project. Drawing upon his experience in the technology division, Clinton helped bring more advanced technology to both bank employees and customers. 

Though challenging, Clinton persevered to perfect the system without creating a disruption and described the operation as “a team effort.” While striving to ensure customers would not be impacted by the system enhancement, he was able to maintain a sense of humor along the way.

“You have to enjoy what you do and you have to bring a little humor to it,” Clinton explained. “In part, from my perspective, it’s a way of helping someone get through the day. It’s a feel-good act, and in the end, it brings people together.”

After all these years, Clinton said he continues to find joy in what he does. 

“I’m fortunate that, 30 years later, I still love to get up and go to work, and I’m fortunate to be able to do what I love,” he said.

In addition to his affiliation with Salisbury Bank, Clinton’s involvement in Millerton is evident through his various contributions to the community. Along with his past presidency with the former Millerton Chamber of Commerce during the mid-1990s, Clinton served as the treasurer for the Millerton Lions Club from 1994 to 2007 and then as its president from 2007 to 2014. He also played an instrumental role in the formation of the North East Fire District’s treasurership and has been involved with the Wassaic Fire District for close to 22 years as its treasurer.

To save birds, plant for caterpillars

You must figure that, as rough as the cold weather has been for us, it’s worse for wildlife. Here, by the banks of the Housatonic, flocks of dark-eyed juncos, song sparrows, tufted titmice and black-capped chickadees have taken up residence in the boxwood — presumably because of its proximity to the breakfast bar. I no longer have a bird feeder after bears destroyed two versions and simply throw chili-flavored birdseed onto the snow twice a day. The tiny creatures from the boxwood are joined by blue jays, cardinals and a solitary flicker.

These birds will soon enough be nesting, and their babies will require a nonstop diet of caterpillars. This source of soft-bodied protein makes up more than 90 percent of native bird chicks’ diets, with each clutch consuming between 6,000 and 9,000 caterpillars before they fledge. That means we need a lot of caterpillars if we want our bird population to survive.
