Millerton’s Markonic makes All-American at Bates

By whitney josepheditor@millertonnews.comMILLERTON — Webutuck graduate and college freshman Claire Markonic is making a name for herself as a top-level runner at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, this season. The Millerton resident and her women’s distance medley relay teammates received All-America honors at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in Lincoln, Neb., on Friday, March 14.“It was incredible just to have the opportunity to go. Not many freshman get that chance,” she said during a phone interview, her voice brimming with excitement. “My teammates are amazing — they’re so talented. It was so incredible standing up on the pedestal getting the trophy with my teammates. It was unreal.”Aside from Markonic the team included sophomore Isabelle Unger, junior Sarah Fusco and senior Kallie Nixon. They were seeded second in the women’s distance medley relay race, finishing in 11:44.72, “a Bates record and 0.11 seconds faster than the team-record time they set earlier this season,” according to a statement from the college.Bates ended up finishing in fifth-place, less than five seconds behind champion Wisconsin-Oshkosh, which finished with 11:39.94.“We are just extremely proud,” said Olivia Markonic, Claire’s mother, speaking for both herself and Claire’s father. “We’re proud that she is accomplishing her goals she set for herself on the field hockey field, on the track, and most importantly, in the classroom. Claire is very happy, that’s what really matters most.”And she is. Just ask.“I love it. It’s been amazing. It’s the highlight of my college experience so far,” she said. “I love my team — they’re amazing.”Because the women’s team finished in the top eight, they were awarded All-America honors. It was the first such honors for both Markonic and Unger, the second for both Fusco and Nixon. Markonic ran the 400-meter leg, and according to the school, “kept Bates close enough through the first two legs that Fusco was able to reach the race’s front pack about halfway through her 800-meter leg.”Olivia Markonic said her daughter has a positive attitude when it comes to athletics, even if it means dealing with a less-than-stellar field hockey season (Bates finished with a record of 4-10 this year).“We asked her if she was disappointed at all with their standing and her response was, ‘No, not at all. I love the sport, love my team and coaches and don’t want to see the season end,’” said her mother, echoing Claire’s words. “She feels the same about track. Winter season just ended and spring has just begun. She is eager to see just what she can accomplish … so are we.”Claire puts a lot of hard work into her activities, as well as into her school work. She has track practice everyday, and then has to lift at the gym three times a week. She plays field hockey in the fall, runs indoor track in the winter, and then outdoor track in the spring. Though it keeps her extremely busy, Claire said she understands that now is the time to do the things she loves.“You’ve got to make sure you do it because it’s an opportunity you don’t want to miss out on, and be ready to give it your all, because what you get out of it is just amazing,” she said, adding the instantaneous group of 60-plus friends she gained from joining track at Bates was a bonus she didn’t expect, but one that she gladly welcomed.Markonic graduated from Webutuck High School in 2013; her father, Marty, is the mayor of Millerton.
