Triple art 3-D offering at Millerton Library through December

MILLERTON — The NorthEast-Millerton Library (NEML) often has rotating exhibits featuring local artists, but rarely do the shows highlight a trio of talented creative area residents all at once.

For the month of December, though, the NEML is doing just that, featuring Tri-state region 3-D artists Joey Sage Jablonski, Diane Schapira and Karen Culbreth.

Joey Sage Jablonski

According to their autobiographies, Jablonski “is a ceramic artist in the Northwest Corner of Connecticut who creates wheel-thrown pottery and sculptural clay works incorporating themes from nature.”

Jablonski said, “The actual process of working in clay makes me feel as if I’m touching the ground and touching the sky at the same time, adding that the greatest satisfaction comes from “sharing these works celebrating nature, having them become part of a home — someone’s daily life.”

Diane Schapira

Lakeville, Conn., resident Schapira, meanwhile, has been “a potter for 50 years specializing in functional pottery.”

She also noted that it is “very satisfying” to know the items she creates “become part of other people’s households and routines.” She similarly creates “useful trays, sculptures, reliquaries and boxes of all sorts, often in the form of houses with removable roofs,” many of which are made “with a theme in mind: home, grief, hope.”

Karen Culbreth

North East resident Culbreth recently retired from her 30-year career in art education at the Pine Plains Central School District. Concentrating on clay creations, many of her pieces focus on her musings on the COVID-19 pandemic, reflections on feelings. They include her “whimsical ceramic pears and bowls.”

More information

The three-dimensional items made by these talented women will be on display at the NEML at 75 Main St. in Millerton throughout December.

Visitors need not have library cards, although residents may apply for one at the main desk. Proof of residency is required for the free card. Nonresidents may obtain a card for $25.

Artists interested in displaying their work in 2022 may apply to Library Director Rhiannon Leo-Jameson in person or by calling 518-789-3340. If displayed items are sold, a 10% donation to the library fund from the artist is appreciated.

While playing outside in the early post-pandemic days, Berkshire Busk! founder Eugene Carr had an epiphany: why not expand the idea of performing on the street (aka busking)into a full-fledged festival in Great Barrington?

As an entrepreneur and cellist, Carr envisioned a well-organized jamboree featuring regional talent, including musicians, acrobats, storytellers, fire-eaters, and more. He formed a team, connected with local businesses and the town of Great Barrington, and launched Berkshire Busk! in 2021. Since then, Berkshire Busk! has grown into a summer staple for Great Barrington.

'Sylvia' brings heart, humor and one unforgettable dog to Sharon Playhouse stage

What if the dog onstage was played by a person? That’s the delightful twist in A.R. Gurney’s “Sylvia,” opening at the Sharon Playhouse on Aug. 29. In this clever and heartfelt comedy, the title character — a stray pup who disrupts the lives of a married couple — is portrayed not in costume but by an actor who brings insight, charm, and chaos to the role.

Stepping into Sylvia’s paws is Jen Cody, who is returning to the Sharon Playhouse in a starring role for her third year in a row, ready to bring this spirited dog to life. She’s joined by Jonathan Walker as Greg, the middle-aged man smitten with his new four-legged friend, and Jennifer Van Dyck as Kate, his wife, whose patience and identity are tested by Sylvia’s sudden presence in their home.
