Millerton Police to hold drug and medication drop-off

MILLERTON — The Millerton Police Department invites residents from around the region to drop off unused or expired medication on Saturday, May 20, from 10 a.m. until noon. The event, dubbed Shed the Meds, is being sponsored by state Sen. Sue Serino (R-41).

According to Police Chief David Rudin, Serino approached the department with the idea, and has been promoting it throughout the county.

Those who bring their medications will not be asked to prove residency, nor will they be asked their name. Any and all types of drugs will be accepted — legal or illegal. Rudin said it’s the ideal time to throw away medication that has been hanging around the house for too long.

“The nice thing about this event is, a lot of people used to flush their meds down the toilet, but that all goes into the groundwater,” he said. “Or, people would just store them, and when they’re sitting around … that’s a problem for people with kids who are experimenting with drugs, or for people who might take meds that have been sitting around for a while. It could be years old. This is a reminder to people they need to clean out. Certainly, once meds get old, they’re not as effective as medication any more.”

The drug dropbox in Millerton is completely anonymous, and only needles won’t be accepted.

Those who stop by will be given plastic bags for their pills, which will then be placed in a secure dropbox. Police personnel will be on hand to assist. Then, at day’s end, the medication will go to Poughkeepsie to be incinerated.

The Millerton drop site is the newest one in Dutchess County. It’s been installed for about a year, but this is the first time a special event featuring the dropbox is being held. Mailers promoting the day have been sent throughout the Harlem Valley, and Rudin said he would be pleased if participants come from even farther away.

One tip: Remove labels from prescription bottles, if possible.

“A lot of people don’t want to be bothered with that,” said Rudin. “And it does all go into a bag, which we then wrap up and seal before it goes to Poughkeepsie. I just wouldn’t want to drop off something like that with my name on it. Best practice suggests removing any labels.”

The Millerton Police Station is located at 21 Dutchess Ave., Millerton. For more information, call 518-789-6355.

MILLBROOK — Fresh off a narrow win in the race for Dutchess County Legislature, newly elected Eric Alexander — whose victory helped flip the county from red to blue — said the shift marks a “renewed commitment to good governance.” In November, Democrats took control of the legislature for the first time since 2008, and Alexander edged out his Republican opponent, Dierdre Houston, by just 41 votes.

A first-time candidate with an extensive career spanning communications and financial services, 69-year-old Alexander said, “To be able to start a new chapter at this stage of my life, I really hope I’ll be able to make a difference.”
