Millerton organizes for upcoming year

Millerton — The Village Board gathered for its annual reorganization meeting on Monday, April 6. At that time a number of appointments were made and resolutions passed.

Mayor Marty Markonic appointed Trustee Christine Bates as deputy mayor. 

James Milton was appointed working supervisor of the water and highway department.

David Rudin was appointed officer in charge of the Police Department.

Kenneth McLaughlin was appointed building inspector.

Nancy Brusie was appointed zoning enforcement officer.

Lance Middlebrook was appointed to the Planning Board and named as Planning Board chairman.

De Lora Brooks was appointed Zoning Board of Appeals chairwoman.

James Riley was appointed as dog control officer.

Cheryl Katan was appointed as recreation director.

The Village Board meeting schedule was confirmed: meetings will  be held on the third Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at Village Hall.

The Millerton News was named as the village’s official newspaper.

Village Clerk Amber Jordan was declared the registrar of vital statistics.

Village committees were also assigned.

The Community Development/Celebrations Committee will be manned by Trustees Christine Bates and Stephen Waite.

The Personnel/Ethics Committee will be manned by Trustees Debbie Middlebrook and Bates.

The Health and Emergency Preparedness Committee will be manned by Middlebrook and Waite.

The Sidewalks Committee will be manned by Middlebrook and Trustee David Sherman.

The Highway Committee will be manned by Sherman and Mayor Marty Markonic.

The Police Department Committee will be manned by Middlebrook and Waite.

The Recreation and Youth Committee will be manned by Bates and Waite.

The Water Department Committee will be manned by Sherman and Bates.

The Shade Tree Committee will be manned by Bates and Sherman.

SALISBURY — What makes or breaks a local newspaper is its reputation, Lakeville Journal Executive Editor Christian Murray said at the Scoville Memorial Library Saturday, March 7.

Murray and publisher James Clark led a discussion at the library that was originally scheduled for January, but the weather intervened.

Library building expected to reopen one month after burst pipe floods basement

MILLERTON — Library officials expect the NorthEast-Millerton Library to be fully open the weekend of March 14-15, a full month after a burst pipe forced librarians to move operations to the annex building on Century Boulevard.

Executive Director Rhiannon Leo-Jameson said the temporary relocation has been stressful, but library patrons have been understanding and using the library to the fullest extent possible.

Alfred Lyon Ivry

SALISBURY — Alfred Lyon Ivry, a long-time resident of Salisbury, and son of Belle (Malamud) and Morris Ivry, died in Bergen County, New Jersey, on Feb. 12 at the age of 91, surrounded by family members. Born and raised in Brooklyn, he was a graduate ofAbraham Lincoln High School and Brooklyn College, where he earned a B.A. in English literature and Philosophy and served as drama critic for the school paper.

Alfred earned a PhD in Medieval Jewish Philosophy from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts in 1963 and in 1971 was awarded a D. Phil in Medieval Islamic Philosophy from Oxford University, Linacre College.

Alice Gustafson

LAKEVILLE — Alice Gustafson (née Luchs), 106, of Lakeville, Connecticut, passed away on March 2, 2026. Born in Chicago on Dec. 15, 1919, Alice was raised between New York City, Florida and Lime Rock, where she graduated from Salisbury High School in 1937.

Alice’s career spanned roles at Conover-Mast Publications in New York City, The Lakeville Journal, the Interlaken Inn, and as a secretary to the past president of Smith College. In 1948, she married Herbert “Captain Gus” Gustafson at Trinity Church in Lime Rock.

KENT — Carol L. Hoffman Matzke passed away peacefully with family by her side on Feb. 22, 2026.

She was a beloved mother and stepmother, daughter, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, community member, and friend.Her presence will be deeply missed. She had a beautiful way of loving, accepting, and supporting all the many members of her vast family, and of welcoming others into her family circle. She was intelligent and well-informed about history and current events, and she took a genuine interest in knowing and understanding everyone she met, from friends and family right down to the stranger who stood next to her in line at the grocery store. Kind and generous, her family and friends knew that she would do anything in her power to help and support them.
