Millerton News at NYPA

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Staff members of The Lakeville Journal Co., including publisher and editor-in-chief Janet Manko, editors, the composing department and advertising sales representatives, headed to the annual
convention of the New York Press Association April 3 to 4.

The convention offers an opportunity to discuss best practices and new innovations with newspaper colleagues from throughout New York state. A majority of association members are independent, community weekly newspapers.

Part of the convention is the annual Better Newspaper Contest. This year, The Millerton News (owned by The Lakeville Journal Company), took home two first-place wins and a third-place honor.

The paper won first place in Coverage of the Arts for its Compass arts and entertainment section. The judge said, “Beautifully presented, well-organized ‘eye appeal’ combined with engaging and varied content, and a great use of black and white — classic with contemporary energy. If I lived in the area, I would look for it every week.

The Towns and Villages supplement that featured Tri-state area families won first place for Best Special Section — Advertising. “Unique concept on a community guide. Ad layout worked well with stories, the judge said.

And the paper’s annual Gift Guide won third place in Special Holiday Edition. The judge called it “A great ‘Gift Guide.’ Informational in both advertising and editorial side. Great look. Very well done.

Marsden Epworth is the editor of the three winning sections.

SALISBURY — The Twin Lakes Association is taking an earlier and more aggressive approach to fighting the spread of invasive hydrilla in East Twin Lake by dosing the whole northeast bay, from May through October, with low-level herbicide treatments instead of spot treatments.
