The ‘A-Fair’ before the fair was an affair to remember

MILLBROOK —  With food, milkshakes, adorable animals and lots of activity on the lawns above the lake at the Millbrook Vineyards and Winery, the “A-Fair to Remember” pre-fair event to support 4-H youth took place on Sunday, June 4.

The pre-fair is a means of raising money to make sure that every child who wants to go to the Dutchess County Fair, or participate in the fair, can do so. The staff of Cornell Cooperative Extension Dutchess County (CCEDC) works hard to make the day special, for those attending and for those who are taking part in it.

The milkshakes were authentic Dutchess County Fair milkshakes provided by the Dutchess County Dairy Committee. There was also fresh lemonade, iced tea, popcorn, shaved ice and cotton candy. Live music added to the party atmosphere, and there was also a live auction.

4-H is America’s largest youth development organization with close to 6 million members, mostly in rural areas. Visitors to the pre-fair saw 4-H youngsters and their animals, including rabbits, chickens, goats, ducks, lambs, horses and oxen. Most of the animals were cared for, even carried about, by 4-H youths, and could be petted, photographed or just admired.

AMENIA — The much-anticipated annual Amenia Garden Tour drew a steady stream of visitors to admire five local gardens on Saturday, July 13, each one demonstrative of what a green thumb can do. An added advantage was the sense of community as neighbors and friends met along the way.

Each garden selected for the tour presented a different garden vibe. Phantom’s Rock, the garden of Wendy Goidel, offered a rocky terrain and a deep rock pool offering peaceful seclusion and anytime swims. Goidel graciously welcomed visitors and answered questions about the breathtaking setting.

Tangled Lines: Casting into depths at dawn

PRATTSVILLE, N.Y. — The Schoharie Creek, a fabled Catskill trout stream, has suffered mightily in recent decades.

Between pressure from human development around the busy and popular Hunter Mountain ski area, serious flooding, and the fact that the stream’s east-west configuration means it gets the maximum amount of sunlight, the cool water required for trout habitat is simply not as available as in the old days.
