Join Amenia’s Earth Day clean-up on April 26

Earth Day is Tuesday, April 22, and a great way to celebrate it is to join Amenia’s Conservation Advisory Council’s town-wide Clean Up Day Saturday, April 26. From 9 a.m. to noon, volunteers will be fanning out from the centers of downtown Wassaic and Amenia to pick up litter and beautify our hamlets. Even if you have only 20 minutes to join the fun, this is a group exercise everyone can contribute to and benefit from. Volunteers can sign in and pick up contractor bags and reflective vests at Fountain Square/Bank of Millbrook, 4958 Route 22, Amenia, or check in with Conservation Advisory Council members at Borden Park, 37 Furnace Bank Road in Wassaic.

Then you can join other groups or go it alone in your own neighborhood, focusing on high-visibility roadways, civic centers, the rail trail, etc. Filled bags and large items can be picked up at various locations by 11:30 a.m. that day by contacting Vicki Doyle: 845-489-7826 or vdoyle@ameniany.gov. Trash bags and vests can be arranged to be picked up in advance, upon request. Many thanks to Welsh Sanitation for allowing us to bring litter to their recycling center for free, once again, to help us commemorate Earth Day in Amenia.

District Attorney details unified surveillance system

The Dutchess County Real-Time Crime Center, which came online over the course of the past year, is being hailed as a first-of-its-kind collaboration between county, state and local law enforcement agencies, District Attorney Anthony Parisi told The News on Friday, Nov. 6.

Real-time crime centers are emerging nationwide as powerful surveillance tools. They link networks of government, business and privately owned security cameras into centralized systems accessible to police. These centers often employ artificial intelligence technologies such as facial recognition, license plate scanning and video analysis that can compress hours of footage into minutes of usable data.
