Baked to sweet pop-up perfection

WASSAIC — After being welcomed back to the hamlet of Wassaic for another season on Saturday, May 1, The Newsstand, next to The Lantern at 10 Main St., was modified to host a Pop-Up Bakery for community members and visitors to the hamlet to savor some sweet treats on Sunday, May 2.

Along with a couple of culinary and baking magazines, the shelves of the structure offered an appealing selection of baked goods from a wide range of local bakers, including pretzels and cardamon buns from Ariel Yotive of Troutbeck; ramp cheddar scones from John Dearth of The Lantern; space dogs and potato crushers from Pawling Bread Co.; and many others. 

Running from noon until all of the baked goods were sold out, the Pop-Up Bakery attracted a line of customers drawn to the bright white stand and the homemade goodies on display.

Ten percent of all the proceeds raised at the Pop-Up Bakery were directed to benefit Heart of Dinner. The mission-led, volunteered-powered 501(C)3 nonprofit organization “exists to combat food insecurity and isolation within NYC’s elderly Asian American community,” according to its website, www.heartofdinner.org.

Millerton’s Demitasse shutters Main Street storefront, goes digital

MILLERTON — Some might have argued that launching an in-person retail business during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic wasn’t advisable. But against all odds, Demitasse in Millerton managed not only to build a thriving, mission-based brand in a small storefront on Main Street, it developed a loyal customer base and provided a welcoming space for visitors. Last week, Demitasse announced it is closing-up shop and moving fully online.

“We are excited,” said owner Hayden McIntosh Geer, who opened Demitasse with her husband, Richard, in 2020. “Though we will miss our customers and the camaraderie on Main Street, it feels right and there was no second guessing.”

Historical Society talk to explore the life and times of a Revolutionary Era loyalist

AMENIA — While the courage and perseverance of Revolutionary era patriots is well understood and celebrated, the stories of the fate of British loyalists in New York are not as clear.

Seen as the initial event in observance of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, the Amenia Historical Society will present a talk titled, “The Plight of a Loyalist in Revolutionary New York,” examining the journal of Cadwallader Colden, Jr., spanning the period of 1777-1779. The speaker will be noted author, genealogist and historian Jay Campbell.

Townscape raffle reaches $7K pot

MILLERTON — The Townscape 50/50 raffle drawing has collected a pot of more than $7,000.

That raffle drawing will take place this Saturday at 2 p.m. in Veteran’s Park. The moment is not just about picking a winner, but also about reflecting on how far Townscape has come since its humble beginnings in 1998, when founder Catherine Fenn — alongside Renee Vollen and Jan Gilmor — first set out to beautify her beloved village.
