‘Summer Stroll’ event, concert planned July 13

MILLERTON — On Saturday, July 13, the Village of Millerton and the Millerton Business Alliance (MBA) will host a series of events throughout the day.

The first gathering will begin with Millerton’s annual Summer Stroll, sponsored by the MBA, from 2 to 5 p.m. on Main Street. More than 20 stores and businesses will participate in the stroll.

NorthEast-Millerton Library and NBT Bank will have activities and possible giveaways set-up in Veterans Park across from the Moviehouse. Guest artists will perform live music throughout the stroll and there will be a face painting fundraiser for Webutuck High School.

Then, at 5 p.m. a free concert is planned at Eddie Collins Memorial Park. The group performing is the Northwest Passage Band, which is local to the Northwest Connecticut area.

Community organizations will be represented at the concert, and there will be food and drink options. Food vendors include Mario and Esperanza’s Kitchen and Weezie’s Quick Stop.

Climate Smart, Dutchess County Human Rights Commission, North East Community Center, NorthEast-Millerton Library and Townscape are some organizations that will have tables and activities at the park during the concert.

Honoring the past: bearing witness at Auschwitz

Jan. 27 marked the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. I traveled to Poland as part of a delegation for the commemoration and spent a few days before the event with my father and sister learning, remembering and gathering information.

My dad’s parents, Miriam and Yehuda, of blessed memory, were deported to Auschwitz -Birkenau from the Lódz Ghetto. They both had families that perished and met each other after the camp was liberated.
