MILLBROOK — VFW Post 9008 held an awards ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Millbrook Firehouse.

Post Commander Jeff Moseman was master of ceremonies, aided by Vice Commander Dave Rogers. Members of the community, as well as some first responders, were recognized and thanked by the Post and the audience for their contributions to the community.

Included in those being honored were “Uncle” Mike Hansen of iHeartRadio’s Country 107.3 WRWD, New York State Police Sergeant Michael D. Wood of Troop K, and Millbrook Middle School physical education teacher Joseph Carbone as well as Millbrook Mayor Tim Collopy and the Village of Millbrook for their unwavering support of the Post.

Hansen was awarded a Citizenship Medal for his complimentary radio promotions and hosting the Post commander for Post events and issues. Carbone also received a Citizenship Medal, as he annually hosts the veterans’ recognition and breakfast at the Millbrook Central School District.

James Smith of Union Vale Rescue was given a First Responder Award for his support of the Millbrook community. Crissy Moseman, Debbie Rogers and Kathi Galli were given Buddy Poppy bracelets for their work in Buddy Poppy sales, and Sierra Mason was awarded the Senior ROTC Medal for Leadership, Patriotism and Commitment. She is a member of the Marist College ROTC.

Collopy accepted the certificate, saying: “I am honored to be given the opportunity to say a few words at this VFW celebration of community give-back. It is apparent to me that your commitment of service to country has led to a lifetime commitment of service to community, and that makes you role models for the rest of us to follow. The same can be said for the rest of the honorees here tonight. In this day and age when organizations are struggling to find volunteers to replace those of us who are aging out, what you do shines a light on the importance of ongoing community involvement. To all of you, for your military service past, and for your community service, present, on behalf of the residents of the Village of Millbrook, I thank you for your service.”

On Thursday, Nov. 9, the Veterans Recognition and Breakfast will take place at 8 a.m. at Millbrook Middle School. On Saturday, Nov. 11, the Post will lead a ceremony at the Village Green in honor of Veterans Day.

‘Women Laughing’ celebrates New Yorker cartoonists

Ten New Yorker cartoonists gather around a table in a scene from “Women Laughing.”

Eric Korenman

There is something deceptively simple about a New Yorker cartoon. A few lines, a handful of words — usually fewer than a dozen — and suddenly an entire worldview has been distilled into a single panel.

There is also something delightfully subversive about watching a room full of women sit around a table drawing them. Not necessarily because it seems unusual now — thankfully — but because “Women Laughing,” screening May 9 at The Moviehouse in Millerton, reminds us that for much of The New Yorker’s history, such a gathering would have been nearly impossible to imagine.

Fans of the late singer-songwriter Todd Snider will have a rare opportunity to gather in celebration of his life and music when “A Love Letter to Handsome John,” a documentary by Otis Gibbs, screens for one night only at The Colonial Theatre in North Canaan on Friday, May 8.

Presented by Wilder House Berkshires and The Colonial Theatre, the 54-minute film began as a tribute to Snider’s friend and mentor, folk legend John Prine. Instead, following Snider’s death last November at age 59, it became something more intimate: a portrait of the alt-country pioneer during the final year of his life.
