Dutchess Day School opens for its 66th year, in person

MILLBROOK -— Like most schools around the world, Dutchess Day School (DDS) in Millbrook closed its campus in March and went online for the spring term due to COVID-19. School reopened in stages beginning Sept. 10, in person, with seventh and eighth graders being the last to arrive on campus on Wednesday, Sept. 16.

The school is following all CDC and state guidelines regarding social distancing, mask wearing, health screening and other safety protocols. DDS is prepared to go online again if necessary and teachers and students are practicing technology skills that will prepare them for that possibility.

Meanwhile, the school community is enjoying the chance to be on campus together, to welcome the more than 70 new students.

“Masks are worth the trouble; we would wear masks all the time, if it meant we could come to school,” said one third-grader.

“Sometimes you’d be drilling four thousand pieces of wood over the course of a few days,” Roccanova recalled of his factory days, where he made display cases for department stores. “I got to see how things were made, and I got comfortable with the equipment.”
