Bombers defeat Blazers in away game, lose to Dragons on home front

MILLBROOK — Following a triumph in an away game against Millbrook on Wednesday, May 19, the Stissing Mountain High School varsity baseball team endured a tough loss at the hands of the Dover High School baseball team the next day, Thursday, May 20.

Held on the ballfield at Millbrook High School, the Bombers launched their Wednesday game against the Millbrook Blazers at 4:15 p.m.

Among the highlights of the players batting for Pine Plains, Devon Hurst and Ryan Lynn each hit a double while Aidan Damon hit a sacrifice fly and Dalton Burns made a home run. Pitching for the Bombers, Damon had a win and a wild pitch, while for Millbrook, Andrew Szostak had five winning pitches, Dylan Ross had two winning pitches and Nathan Osborne had one winning pitch.

By game’s end, Stissing Mountain beat Millbrook 12-2.

The next day, the Stissing Mountain Bombers took on Dover High School Dragon’s varsity baseball team, this time on their home turf on the Pine Plains field at 5 p.m.

Pitching for the Bombers, Matt Damon pitched for four full innings and got two out of the three outs in the game’s fifth inning with seven strikeouts and zero earned runs in a no decision, according to Stissing Mountain Head Varsity Baseball Coach Steve Huber. Pitching for Dover, Kevin Kirk had one hit, no earned runs and 13 strikeouts. Dover’s winning run was walked in with a runs batted in by Evan O’Connor.

Considered a tough loss for their team, Stissing Mountain was defeated by Dover with a final score of 0-1.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
