Millerton honors its local veterans

MILLERTON — American Legion Post 178 in Millerton held a ceremony honoring local veterans on Monday, Nov. 11.
Residents, elected officials, the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office and retired veterans all came to pay respects at Veteran’s Park downtown. The ceremony began at 11 a.m. and opened with a prayer read by an American Legion member.

“As we look back on those sacrifices, we know Lord that you were blessing us through each one of those people who sacrificed their life in defense of our nation,” said Chaplain Julian Strauss, “We ask you to bless the members of our armed forces, give them courage, hope and strength, and may they ever experience your firm support, gentle love, compassionate healing.”

The prayer ended with the raising of a flag, lifted by Chaplain Strauss. After a moment of silence, three veterans from the community performed a three-volley salute. Once the shots were fired, a recording of the Star-Spangled Banner began to play in honor of those who served.

After the ceremony was completed, members of the local legion invited the community to attend a small lunch gathering at their American Legion building at 155 Route 44 in Millerton.

Lent: Time to consider social gospel movement

We are entering the annual Christian season of Lent this week. With its 40 days of contemplation and “little Easter” Sundays, it is a time to remember the healing ministry and the sacrifice of Jesus.During this season, we are invited to think deeply about our role as agents of grace and love in our hurting world.

There is a long history of making sacrifices and commitments for Lent, modeling our discipleship and hopes for a more heavenly world. It is through this lens that I invite you to join us in considering what gifts and services the community needs that we can commit to bringing forth in the weeks leading up to Easter. While many lean into solitary introspection during Lent, it may be particularly advantageous to use our meditations and sacrifices for the greater good this year.
