MILLBROOK — The Lewis Ruge family has been honored by the Family Services Award for exemplary service to their community. After decades of service, the Ruges will receive The Lifetime Achievement Award. A ceremony was planned for Thursday, April 30, in Poughkeepsie, but has been canceled due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

CEO of Family Services of Poughkeepsie Brian Doyle remarked in a press release, “We are delighted to shine a spotlight on the Ruges [who] have been deeply involved and committed to our Hudson Valley community.”

For 30 years, the service awards have been bestowed on people who have made important contributions and who have reflected the ideals of Family Services.

For decades, the Ruges have owned car dealerships; one is in Rhinebeck and one is located on Route 44 in Millbrook. They had a dealership in Copake, which closed shortly before they made the move to Millbrook.

Lewis Ruge said, “There are so many good people in this community who are deserving of the Family of the Year Award; we’re truly honored to have been selected and express our deepest gratitude to all involved.”

The original Ruge business was an Oldsmobile dealership that the family opened in Rhinebeck in 1935. Kristen Ruge Hutchins and her father, Lewis, opened the Millbrook dealership in July 2016. They are active in the community, even driving a Ruge truck in the Parade of Lights each holiday season, as well as being involved in several other community events like the Millbrook Horse Trials.

The dealership in Millbrook has roughly 30 employees; the Ruges employ about 110 people among their multiple businesses.

“We love living, working and volunteering in the Hudson Valley,” said the Ruge patriarch. “We consider ourselves very fortunate and I enjoy every moment of it all.”

Another family, the Veith’s of Poughkeepsie, were also honored with a Good Neighbor Award from Family Services. Doyle stated the awards are given in gratitude of those who make a significant impact on their community.

“The awards reflect the ideals of Family Services by helping to create stronger communities where everyone has the opportunity to lead their best lives, while also having demonstrated huge success in their respective professional and business pursuits,” he said.

Family Services is a social service organization serving the Hudson Valley. Their programs include Behavioral Health, Victim’s Services, Family Programs and Youth Services and Community Safety and Prevention. In 2019, it served more than 10,000 children, adults and families in Dutchess, Ulster and Orange Counties.
