John Montross O’Hara

SALISBURY — John Montross O’Hara Sr., age 96, a longtime resident of Twin Lakes, Connecticut, passed away peacefully at his home on May 2, 2026. Born in Torrington, Connecticut, John was raised in Twin Lakes, where he developed a deep and lifelong connection to the community. He graduated from Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village, Class of 1947, and went on to attend The Citadel before continuing his studies through the ROTC program at the University of Virginia, graduating with the Class of 1951. He proudly served his country for two years during the Korean War.

Following his military service, John returned to the University of Virginia, where he earned his law degree. He went on to achieve the highest score on the New York Bar Examination at the time.

John began his legal career with the distinguished New York City law firm of Rogers & Wells, where he practiced for 10 years. In 1968, John and his family moved to Michigan to join R.L. Polk & Company as General Counsel. His leadership and vision led to his appointment as Chief Executive Officer in 1978, a role he held until his retirement in 1990. During his tenure, he made significant contributions to the automotive industry and was honored with a Distinguished Service Citation. He was also inducted into the Motor Vehicle Hall of Fame by the American Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Association at a ceremony in Las Vegas. Following his retirement, John divided his time between Rancho Santa Fe, California, and his beloved Twin Lakes, Connecticut.

In 1954, John married Mildred Michel, with whom he shared many years until her passing in 1980. In 1984, he married Sally Henby.John was preceded in death by Sally and his brother, Jesse T. O’Hara. He is survived by his children, Pamela Johnson (Wally), John M. O’Hara Jr. (Amy), and Chris Baron (Mark); five grandchildren; one great-grandchild and Sally’s children and extended family.

John will be remembered for his intelligence, leadership, dedication to family, and the integrity with which he lived his life. His legacy will endure through the many lives he touched.

Funeral services for John M. O’Hara will be held on Tuesday May 12, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. in the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home 118 Main St. North Canaan, CT 06018. Burial will follow with full military honors in Grassy Hill Cemetery, Falls Village, CT. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Monday May 10, 2026 from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. and again Tuesday morning from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m.

AMENIA — Webutuck Central School District voters approved a 2026-27 budget on Tuesday, May 19, that triggers the district's first property tax increase in over five years.

The approved spending plan locks in a 1.35% increase to the tax levy. Under the new rate, property taxes will sit at approximately $8.77 per $1,000 of assessed home valuation. According to Webutuck Business Administrator Robert Farrier, a homeowner with a property valued at $200,000 can expect a total school tax bill of about $2,036 for the upcoming year.

MILLBROOK — Millbrook Central School District had its proposed budget ratified Tuesday, May 19.

Residents voted 391-221 in favor of the $37,992,751 plan. It’s a year-over-year increase of 6.57%, and the tax levy will rise at a rate of 7.02%.

Washington officials eye improvements to town pool

MILLBROOK — Members of the Washington Town Board are calling for upgrades to the town’s recreation area in Mabbetsville along Route 44, saying the park’s roughly 80-year-old pool is outdated and increasingly difficult to maintain.

Former Washington Councilmember Mike Murphy presented a new report to the Town Board during its regular meeting on Wednesday, May 13, detailing the needed updates to the park.

Man flown to Westchester hospital after lawn mower injury

A Life Flight medical helicopter carried a man to Westchester Medical Center after he sustained injuries to his foot caused by lawn mower blades.

MILLERTON — A man was flown by helicopter to a regional hospital Friday after a lawn mower caused injuries to his foot.

New York State Police troopers arrived at 43 Scenic View Drive in the Scenic View trailer park at 3:15 p.m. on Friday, May 15, after a 52-year-old man had gotten his foot stuck in the blades of his lawn mower.

Local volunteers

Enhancing educational opportunities for students in the Millbrook Central School District since 2001, the Millbrook Educational Foundation took part in the Millbrook Volunteer Fair on Saturday, May 16. Residents were invited to learn about volunteer opportunities with the foundation and a variety of other local and regional organizations. The event, now in its fifth year, was held at the Millbrook Library.

North East home prices hold steady while sales activity slows

Known as the “Ice House,” 12 State Line Road on 3.81 acres was sold by the mortgage holder after standing vacant for years. The property was later renovated and resold for $400,000 on April 15.

MILLERTON — North East’s housing market continued to cool this spring, with home prices holding relatively steady and sales activity slowing compared with the post-pandemic surge that drove prices sharply higher across the region.

The 12-month trailing median sale price for residential properties in the Town of North East, including the Village of Millerton, was $420,000 for the period from May 1, 2025, through April 30, 2026. That figure remained essentially unchanged month-to-month, but marked the second consecutive year of declining annual median prices.
