Hillsdale watercolorist wins first prize in Trinity Church art show

Sue Arnholter’s watercolor painting, “Race Day,” took first prize in the Trinity Episcopal Church juried art show.

The awards were announced at a reception at the church Friday, Sept. 13.

Arnholter, of Hillsdale, said she doesn’t regularly follow horse racing but “I was struck by the movement” during a horse race.

Second prize was an oil painting of three cows in a field by Michael Spross of Millbrook. A retired art teacher, Spross said he started painting the sky at the top of the composition with brushes.

“This is going to take forever,” he thought to himself, so he switched to palette knives and completed the painting that way.

Third prize went to Pamela Berkeley’s oil painting “Bidet and Pussy Willows,” and the People’s Choice award to Gary Finelli’s “Jesus and Me” (pencil and chalk dust).

The judges were Jason Losh and Karin Wexler.

Luis Felber is excited about creating in the Northwest Corner. Coming of age in the British countryside, all he wanted to do as a teen was move to London, the creative heartbeat of England. At 17, he started a band called the Eraserheads and went for it. Since then, he’s been in so many bands he struggles to list them all. But on Saturday, Oct. 3, he’ll be taking the stage at the Cornwall Music Bowl all by himself.

Felber has always felt more comfortable on stage than interacting with people. There’s a sense of purpose in being at a concert. Everybody in the room is there for the same reason: to witness the act of making music. So whether he’s on the stage or in the audience, he feels at home in a venue.

Jim Shepard has published eight novels and six collections of short stories. He’s written for publications including The Paris Review, The Atlantic, Harper’s, Esquire, McSweeny’s and The New Yorker. For more than 30 years, he taught film and creative writing at Williams College. One of his novels was adapted into a movie. His wife, with whom he has three children, is a formidable author and educator in her own right. He has two dogs who he loves enough to include in his publicity photos.

Jim Shepard is one impressive guy.

Though the calendar says summer is over, Berkshire Theatre Group is helping to keep our sun-filled memories alive with its upcoming production of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Auburn’s “Summer, 1976.” This 90-minute, two-character memory play, directed by Isadora Wolfe and starring two-time Tony Award nominee Kate Baldwin and acclaimed stage and screen actor Jennifer Van Dyck, is a funny and sharply observed exploration of friendship, motherhood and personal ambition — and how differently we remember the events that shape our lives.

During America’s bicentennial summer, Diana (Van Dyck), an iconoclastic artist and single mother, and Alice (Baldwin), a free-spirited young housewife, form a close, temporary bond through their young daughters, who share a babysitting group. The play looks back on the months the two women shared, and their recollections reveal the lasting repercussions of the relationship.
