AMENIA — Veterans gathered with their children and grandchildren at Webutuck Elementary School Friday, Nov. 8, for a breakfast and short assembly in the gym.

Parent Teacher Association President Anna Kall organized the special Veterans’ day breakfast that welcomed 13 veterans of the Army, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard to the school. Veterans ate a hot breakfast of eggs, sausage and toast and drew for prizes like fresh pies to take home.

After the breakfast students, teachers and veterans gathered in the gym. After saying the pledge of allegiance the students were seated on the floor to watch a slideshow of community veterans’ portraits and hear a presentation from Army veteran Peter Cipriano about the symbolism of the U.S. flag.

Cries of “red,” “blue,” “fifty,” and “thirteen,” sprung up from the excited kids as Cipriano asked them about the colors of the flag and the number of stars in the blue field.

We just voted, and now I’m sprinting toward Christmas? Too soon? Maybe. But before you judge, hear me out.
