Lady Bombers field hockey conquers its opponents in away games

PINE PLAINS — The Stissing Mountain High School varsity non-league field hockey team found itself on a winning streak last week after competing against Coxsackie-Athens and Our Lady of Lourdes in two separate away games.

Kicking off another week of games at Coxsackie-Athens High School in Coxsackie, Stissing Mountain began their game at 4:15 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 13.

The Lady Bombers scored in the second quarter off a reverse sweep by Arely Soria that was knocked in by Autumn Prezzano. Later in the fourth quarter, Arely sent the ball in and Lindsay Farinaccio finished the job for the Bombers, according to Stissing Mountain Varsity Field Hockey Coach Deborah Beam.

Throughout the game against Coxsackie-Athens, Beam reported Stissing Mountain had seven corners and seven shots, and Alyssa Bathrick, the goalie for Stissing Mountain, made one save. 

For the Coxsackie-Athens, the team had two corners and one shot, and their goalie Emma Williams made five saves. By game’s end, Stissing Mountain went home victorious with a score of 2-0 over Coxsackie-Athens.

On Thursday, Sept. 16, the Lady Bombers faced off against Our Lady of Lourdes at 4 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie.

Beam said Stissing Mountain started scoring in the second quarter with a goal made by Autumn with an assist off a corner by Cameron Decker. A minute later, Michell Barron scored her first varsity goal with an assist by Arely. Amanda Dillinger also scored her first varsity goal in the game with an assist by Ashlee Conley. Moving into the third quarter, Ashlee  scored with an assist from Lindsay.

Later, with just under seven minutes left in the third quarter, Michell scored again for Stissing Mountain from Ashlee’s long pass from the right side of the field. With 13 seconds left in the quarter, Arely scored with assistance from Ashlee.

Moving into the fourth quarter, Ashlee scored from an assist by Ryan Milne. Moving into a circle with a shot, Lourdes Amelia DeMelo scored on her own with a little over five minutes left in the quarter.

Acting as goalie for Our Lady of Lourdes, Courtney Ashburn made five saves, while Alyssa made three saves as goalie for the Bombers. 

The Stissing Mountain team had 14 shots on goal and eight corners while Our Lady of Lourdes had eight corners and four shots. At the end of the game, the Lady Bombers won with a score of 7-1.

Following its game against Our Lady of Lourdes, Stissing Mountain added another win to its overall season record, which as of that time had two wins and one loss.

Amenia gathers at Fountain Square

AMENIA — The community gathered at Fountain Square under sunny skies on Monday, May 26, for a Memorial Day ceremony to honor the fallen who bravely served their country. Remembrances, tributes, prayers and music combined to create the fitting annual tribute.

An Honor Guard from VFW Post #5444 of Dover Plains presented the colors at the start of the ceremony that began promptly at 11 a.m. with a welcome from VFW Commander Nick Woodard to the more than 100 who had gathered.

Townscape’s flower power

The Townscape team was out in force in time for Memorial Day in its 25th year of flower planting.

Planting were place throughout the village, and they can be found at the War Memorial in Veterans Park, in the boxes and planters on the bridge on Main Street, and at the Rail Trail crossing. As always, Tracy Hanselman and Jim Lambertson gave Townscape assistance with their expert horticultural direction, and they will maintain and water the plants throughout the season.
