Millerton’s Golden Wok wins top honors

MILLERTON — Golden Wok Chinese and Japanese Cuisine won the Tang Ho Quality Award for Chinese Catering Industry in America and was awarded a rating of three stars at a conference held Sunday and Monday, Feb. 12 and 13.The conference was organized by The World Association of Chinese Cuisine and The China Cuisine Association.Only 300 restaurants nationwide were considered for the award and 60 winners chosen.Amy Yang, manager of Golden Wok, attended the conference and accepted the award.“I was so surprised. I had an idea going that we were considered, but I did not know we would win. I didn’t even know they had eaten here,” she said.Yang was also treated to cooking demonstrations and a panel with four of Beijing’s top chefs.“It was really interesting to learn new things. I learned to cook from my father when I was 12 and have been cooking ever since. My house is full of cookbooks, I’m always looking for new ideas,” she said.Yang was proud not only for the Golden Wok but for Millerton as well.“It’s really good for the town. Having an award-winning place to eat adds something to the community. We’re really happy,” she said.The Golden Wok, at Railroad Plaza in Millerton, is available for customers to dine-in or take-out. Historical Society talk to explore the life and times of a Revolutionary Era loyalist

AMENIA — While the courage and perseverance of Revolutionary era patriots is well understood and celebrated, the stories of the fate of British loyalists in New York are not as clear.

Seen as the initial event in observance of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, the Amenia Historical Society will present a talk titled, “The Plight of a Loyalist in Revolutionary New York,” examining the journal of Cadwallader Colden, Jr., spanning the period of 1777-1779. The speaker will be noted author, genealogist and historian Jay Campbell.

Townscape raffle reaches $7K pot

MILLERTON — The Townscape 50/50 raffle drawing has collected a pot of more than $7,000.

That raffle drawing will take place this Saturday at 2 p.m. in Veteran’s Park. The moment is not just about picking a winner, but also about reflecting on how far Townscape has come since its humble beginnings in 1998, when founder Catherine Fenn — alongside Renee Vollen and Jan Gilmor — first set out to beautify her beloved village.

Scarecrow contest planned for Millbrook’s Community Day on Sept. 20

MILLBROOK — Local crows should prepare to become highly spooked as planners of Millbrook Community Day, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 20, have announced that a Scarecrow Contest will be part of the festivities.

Residents are invited to get creative and devise their own renditions of a scarecrow from traditional to whatever imagination might come up with.
