MILLBROOK — When someone turns 90, they might expect a pretty great celebration, with all the bells and whistles, people singing “Happy Birthday” and, perhaps, a slice of cake.

Margaret “Peggy” McNamara said she was actually expecting a low-key celebration, maybe a few phone calls and some cards, when she turned 90 years old on Tuesday, April 14. A resident of The Fountains at Millbrook, she is well aware of the current world events, the need for quarantining and social distancing, and she said she’s been OK with it. She was spending a quiet day in her home on her birthday, when she heard some horns tooting and a little commotion outside her windows.

Urged by an aide to go out on her balcony to see what was going on, McNamara was greeted by a large contingency of staff who, holding signs wishing her well, began singing “Happy Birthday” to her; there were balloons, a firetruck and New York State Troopers police cars, all honking their horns, sounding their sirens and singing. Even the sidewalk below her balcony was covered with chalk-drawn pictures and well wishes.

“I’m still on a high from all that,” McNamara said the next day.

She said she was deeply touched by the kindness and caring of all of the people; she loves living at The Fountains, where she’s been since January 2018. She said she is delighted by the care she receives and the activities available to her. Even at 90, she partakes in many of the classes, seminars and other events, including exercise classes.

McNamara came to The Fountains from a condo in the Woodlawn section of The Bronx; her daughter lives in Florida, one of her sons lives in The Bronx and another son lives nearby in LaGrange. The family was supposed to get together to celebrate this important birthday, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they couldn’t.

“We’ll have a get together when all of this is over, “she said.

In the meantime, her local son showed up on the evening of her birthday with a large bouquet of flowers. He stood below the balcony and wished his mother a good year ahead.

A lot of planning went into making the special day for McNamara. Director of Community Life at The Fountains Lisa  Rieckermann said that some of the people who deserve thanks are Susie LaPick, Eddie See, Peggy Tenney, New York State Police Troop K and Troopers Mike Natale and Andrew Patterson and the Union Vale Fire Department.

The “Elusive Ki Shusui” koi were temporarily relocated into a tub before being returned to their home pond at Maxine Pietro’s annual koi harvest at Broccoli Hall Farm in Amenia on Friday, Oct. 10. Speaking of their yellowish beauty, Pietro is pictured pointing out that the fish are scaleless but for scales that grow along the “zipper” on each fish’s dorsal ridge. The koi in the photo are estimated to be 6 or 7 years old.
