May 9, 1935

Woman, 78, Gets License For Hunting, Fishing

MT. WASHINGTON - Mrs. Emma Isaacson, 78, has been issued a combination sporting license by Town Clerk W. A. Hunt. Being over 70 years old, Mrs. Isaacson is entitled to a free license which allows hunting and fishing but no trapping privileges.

Child Health Consultations Will Be Held

A series of child health consultations to be conducted under the direction of Mrs. Mabel Rus-sell of Dover Plains, Dutchess County nurse, have been arranged for communities in the Harlem Valley. Pre-school children between the ages of six months and six years will be administered toxoid for diphtheria and will receive a physical examination at the Hose House in Millerton next Tuesday afternoon from 2 to 4 o’clock daylight saving time. Dr. A. F. Hoag will give the innoculations [sic] and examine the children.

Compete In Caterpillar Eradication Contest

AMENIA - Pupils of the nine district schools in the Town of Amenia are competing in a tent caterpillar eradication contest. Mrs. Joel E. Spingarn is in charge of the contest which will close the week of May. A prize will be awarded to the school collecting the most egg masses.

District Votes To Send Children To Millerton

After a long and heated debate at the annual school meeting Tuesday night, voters of the North East Center School District decided to contract with the Board of Education of the Millerton school to have the children transported here next year. Benjamin Booth was elected trustee of the district, succeeding William M. Sadler who was not a candidate for re-election. Mrs. Nettie Milton was re-elected collector and Mrs. Stella Willson, clerk.

New York Leads In Tree-Planting

ALBANY - New York led all the States of the Union in tree-planting in 1934, according to figures compiled and released today by Lithgow Osborne, Conservation Commissioner. This State planted 40,564,282 trees and of this total 37,882,432 were planted upon reforestation areas alone. The remainder was planted on State lands in the forest preserve.

Park Opens Anyway: Rudd Pond Operation Still Hangs in Limbo

The continued operation of the Taconic State Park at Rudd Pond still hung in limbo this week.

The facilities at Rudd Pond in the Town of NorthEast and at the Taconic Park at Copake Falls will be closed for the summer season unless money is restored to the budget of the New York State Office of Parks and Recreation (OPR), according to State officials.

Desks, Desks, Desks at NECC

MILLERTON — “This is news,” said Partners for Children Director Karen Kisslinger during a speech at the North East Community Center (NECC) on May 4. “So often you read about horrible events, but wonderful things like this happen every day.”

Ms. Kisslinger was referring to the presentation of 20 desks, constructed by students at Webutuck High School, to children graduating from the Partners for Children Program and the Astor Center.

Lamay Promoted

MILLERTON-Private First Class Lamay was recently promoted to Lance Corporal. Lcpl. Lamay joined the United States Marine Corps in July, 2000 and is stationed at Camp LeJune[sic], North Carolina. While at Camp LeJune[sic], Lcpl Lamay continues training with the 3rd Battalion 2nd Marine Division India Co.

Fallen trees cause ongoing power outages in southern Dutchess County

Pawling Road Crews work to clear debris from fallen trees from North Quaker Hill Road in Pawling, New York, after heavy winds felled trees across the area. Six roads are currently closed, causing delays as utility company crews attempt to restore electricity service to customers in Pawling and Dover after a day without power.

Over 600 customers in Dutchess County are still without power in the towns of Pawling and Dover.

After conquering Netflix, a local actor tackles high school

Ivan Howe, 13, performs as Peter Pan at the Sharon Playhouse in Sharon, Connecticut. Howe began his acting career on stage at the Playhouse in “Oliver!” in 2023 and has since performed on stage and even taken a supporting role in the Netflix miniseries “Eric” starring British actor Benedict Cumberbatch.

MILLBROOK — Ivan Howe’s acting career might be growing faster than he is.

In 2023, the Indian Mountain School student and Millbrook native landed his first title role in Sharon Playhouse’s production of “Oliver!” Three years later, he’s about to start high school having shared the screen with Marvel superheroes.

Village officials expect new Water Department building by summer’s end

Caroline Farr-Killmer has been leading the effort to rebuild Millerton’s fire-ravaged Water Department building since last February.

MILLERTON — Village officials expect a rebuild of the fire-ravaged Water Department building to begin soon, with the aim of completing it before the end of summer.

Fire project manager Caroline Farr-Killmer has been managing the effort to demolish and rebuild the village’s Public Works Department building since a fire destroyed it and all the equipment inside last winter. She said that Dutchess County Department of Health approval is the last hurdle for a new Water Department building before construction can start.

Thai tea shop venture delayed over septic approvals

MILLERTON — The opening of a proposed Thai tea shop on Main Street has been delayed while owners await approval from the Dutchess County Department of Health.

John Schildbach, who plans to open the shop with his wife, Kanchisar Jiradhanaiphat, in the former Candy-O’s space, said plans to include seating have complicated the approval process because of the building’s existing septic system.

New owners pledge to keep original mission of Babette’s Kitchen

MILLBROOK — A local eatery that has operated on Millbrook’s Franklin Avenue for more than 20 years is changing ownership.

The new owners at Babette’s Kitchen are two longtime employees. Jennifer Burgen, who has worked at Babette’s for the last three years, and Michael Burgen, who joined the kitchen in December 2024, took over earlier this month. Michael had previously been a general manager at Fern in Lakeville.

Anita L. Gochey

Anita L. Gochey

CANAAN — Anita L. (King) Gochey, 85, of 77 South Canaan Rd. died June 5, 2026, at Geer Village. She was the wife of the late Lester Gochey. Anita was born July 16, 1940,in Winsted, daughter of the late Ivan and Irene (Dulude) King.

Anita was well known throughout the Northwest Corner. She worked for many local businesses and organizations. Anita worked at the Rexall Drug Store, C.A. Lindell and Sons, Bob’s Clothing, Brooks Pharmacy, and the Housatonic Valley Regional High School in the cafeteria.She used her skills in calligraphy to complete the record books for the North Canaan Congregational Church.Anita’s daughter remembers her as being very creative with cardboard, and a loving mom.
