Pine Plains Community Day to mark bicentennial

PINE PLAINS — Pine Plains will hold its Community Day on Saturday, Sept. 9, with a variety of activities including games, food options, and presentations for all to enjoy.

Stop in at the firehouse for a pancake breakfast beginning at 8 a.m. From there, you’re invited to help clean off the graves of the soldiers at Evergreen Cemetery starting at 10 a.m.

If you’re near the Graham-Brush House at 11 a.m., there will be tours, fiddle music and refreshments, plus a sign unveiling at noon. At 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.,Thayer Durrell will perform an historic monologue, and at 3:30 p.m., a time capsule will be buried at the house.

For lunch, get free bites from local restaurants between noon and 2 p.m. and free ice cream at the Community Zone near the American Legion, then stroll past dozens of community group display tables there.

Children can enjoy the bounce house and dunk tank, behind the Bank of Millbrook as well as games, races and other activities. At the Kids’ Zone near the  Stissing Center, they can make a corn husk doll or learn to handle a reptile..  

The high school chorus will perform as well as Half Pint, the Stanfordville Swingers, and the high school jazz quartet, all at the American Legion, Brandon Stoner and Bob and the Boys will play on the Stissing Center office porch  At 6 p.m., enjoy the Red Barn Band at the Back Bar Beer Garden.

AMENIA — After an extensive renovation, Bean Bank Coffee has transformed the former Bank of Millbrook branch at Freshtown Plaza into a coffee shop and bakery serving Amenia and the surrounding community.

The business began its gradual opening Monday, Aug. 24, serving coffee and tea through its drive-through window and drawing curiosity from passersby. By Monday, Sept. 7, Bean Bank Coffee was fully open for business.

WASHINGTON HOLLOW — Craft beer fans in northern Dutchess County have a new local haunt to add to their rotation.

The 40-acre Hopyard Brewery at Washington Hollow opened its doors last month on Route 82, joining a small but growing cluster of farm breweries and distilleries that have reshaped the region’s rural crossroads. This month, the brewery is offering house-brewed Oktoberfest beers, Apple Cider Donut Hard Cider and Pumpkin Ale.

The Town Board unanimously approved a resolution last week authorizing the town to remodel a former Jehovah’s Witness hall on Route 22 for use as a new Town Hall.

The board also approved a $1,435,813 project cost estimate prepared by engineering firm LAN.

KENT, Conn. — A 30-year-old Great Barrington man died Thursday, Sept. 10 after falling approximately 40 feet while rock climbing at St. Johns Ledges along the Appalachian Trail in Kent.

The man was identified as Collin Salmon, who previously lived in Warren.

AMENIA — New York Philharmonic organist and acclaimed choral director Kent Tritle will bring his lively, personable and intimate performance style to The Smithfield Church in Amenia on Saturday, Sept. 19. A highlight of the area’s performance season, the 3 p.m. concert will benefit the Oratorio Society of New York, where Tritle serves as Music Director.

This will be the 14th annual organ recital Tritle has performed on the Smithfield Church’s historic 1893 Johnson and Son tracker organ, meticulously restored and moved from its original location at the First Congregational Church in Kent, Conn.

Propane delivery truck dispute continues in Pine Plains

PINE PLAINS — A dispute between neighboring property owners at 2775 Church St. over equipment storage, drainage and driveway conditions continued before the Pine Plains Planning Board last week.

CEEN Properties owns the industrial lot behind Gallatin Barn Creations. Crown Energy employees use the CEEN property to store propane delivery trucks and reach the lot through a driveway easement across Gallatin’s property.
