Dutchess BOCES awarded grant for LGBTQ+ youth

POUGHKEEPSE — The It Gets Better Project has awarded Dutchess BOCES a $10,000 grant to support LGBTQ+ youth by way of the organization’s “50 states, 50 grants” initiative.

Dutchess BOCES’ staff were excited to hear that they had been granted the $10,000 and have already started to think about where the funds will go for the students.

Erin Scott, a teacher at BOCES’ Career and Technical Institute, applied for the school to be considered for the grant this year. The money BOCES received is going to be used toward professional development for staff, events for the community, and starting a gay-straight alliance club.

“The money that we get will serve the entire community . . . this will provide education, equity and diversity to everybody,” Scott said.

“Receiving this grant means providing a more safe and welcoming learning environment for all students. It reflects our commitment to supporting a diverse population where students can have a sense of belonging,” said Nicholas Millas, the principal of Career and Technical Education at BOCES.

The It Gets Better Project is a nonprofit organization that reaches thousands of schools across the world through its media programming, educational resources, international affiliates in 19 countries, and access to community-based service providers.

Now in its second year, the 50 States 50 Grants initiative awards at least one middle school or high school in each state, funding and supporting the well-being of local LGBTQ+ students.

“50 States, 50 Grants should serve as a reality check to anyone trying to stand in the way of progress,” said Brain Wenke, executive director of the It Gets Better Project.
