Millerton triumphs over Pine Plains on the ball field

MILLERTON— The Pine Plains baseball team fell 5-14 to Millerton at Eddie Collins Field on Thursday, July 12, in a Colonial League tilt.

Cameron Farnham, sporting number 99, a designation all Yankee fans will recognize, pitched a complete game. Being new to the position, at least for this year, he had a bit of trouble finding the plate in the first inning, but then settled down to dominate the rest of the way.

His receiver, Duncan Lazarus, not having caught this year, was steady behind the plate, letting just about nothing get by him, and providing a strong target for his number one. As Farnham became more confident, he began moving the ball around in the zone, striking out four and keeping most of the hit balls on the ground.

Pine Plains came short on players but long on desire. The injury bug has bitten the team hard and continued to bite as the game progressed. David Prentice was the starting pitcher for Pine Plains, but soon an old injury flared up on him, and he had to retire from the mound. Three pitchers followed him for short durations. Coach Steven Speedling, taking care of his players, said, “Everyone will have to pitch, but I’m going to make certain of my players’ health first.”

Catching proved to be a strong position for both sides. Hunter Atkinson capably handled what most people consider baseball’s most difficult position for Pine Plains, matching Lazarus’s excellent effort.

Pine Plains plated three runs in the first when they took advantage of some walks and errors as Farnham was settling in. In the fourth, a few nice hits into left field pushed two runs around the diamond, but Farnham struck out two and forced a come-backer to end the inning.

Millerton’s Devin Watson scored on a fielder’s choice in the first inning and on a wild pitch in the third. Lazarus was plated in the second. In the third, in addition to Watson, Cole Cookingham and Farnham crossed home. In the bottom half of the fourth, the team batted ‘round as each player scored. The game ended on a nice Pine Plains put out, short to second.

Commenting on the game, Millerton coach Jason Watson said, “Our kids played well and worked well as a team.”

Millerton will have a bye on July 19 before traveling to Amenia on the 23rd and Region 1 the 26th.  Pine Plains will host Amenia on the 19th and Region One on the 23rd before traveling to Dover on the 26. Playoffs will begin on July 30.

Millerton resident Ted Kneeland is a retired educator and coach.
