Millerton News wins Editorial award

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Millerton News received a first-place award for its editorials in the Better Newspaper Contest at the New York Press Association annual conference last weekend. The News beat out other weekly papers of similar size from throughout the state. “These editorials are solidly based on news — local news,” said the judge. “They take clear positions, include important context and background information. They’re important to local readers and well written.”The editorials were written by Millerton News Editor Whitney Joseph, who said she was thrilled to receive the honor. Publisher Janet Manko expressed pride in the accomplishment.“This is an honor for Editor Whitney Joseph and for The Millerton News,” Manko said. “It’s also a tribute to our active readers who communicate with us through letters on a regular basis and who care deeply about their communities, as do we.“And, it’s especially gratifying since there is a lot of competition, some very good journalism happening in New York on the local level. Weekly newspapers are as strong as ever in New York,” Manko said. The conference draws weekly news professionals from all over New York and includes an educational offering of seminars by presenters from across the United States, in addition to the chance to enter the Better Newspaper Contest. Journalist Terry Anderson, who was held hostage by Hezbollah Shiite Muslims from 1985 to 1991, spoke at the luncheon Saturday, April 9. He addressed the state of the First Amendment.
