The Millerton News welcomes new interns

The Millerton News gained two new interns earlier this month, both from Millbrook High School. Editor Whitney Joseph is supervising the two students and said she welcomes the opportunity to teach valuable on-the-job skills as their advisor. “It’s a fabulous program — one which teaches not only academic theory but also the practical application of journalistic principles,” said Joseph. “And it’s great working with the Millbrook Central School District in providing students an opportunity to intern at one of the few independently owned, community-based local newspapers in the region.”Eager to learn the ropes behind the journalistic process, Emily Homa and Amanda Critelli started their what they hope will turn into future careers as writers on Thursday, May 22. Their affiliation with The Millerton News was introduced through their school’s inaugural mandatory senior internship. Through that program each student must complete a certain number of hours at their internship along with a final project summing up what they have learned. The new program provides students with insight in particular fields of interests in which they are considering a career.Emily Homa is a senior at Millbrook High School, who is currently interested in pursuing a career in journalism.“I chose The Millerton News for its vast coverage on local events in nearby areas and because of my passion for writing,” she said. Homa spends her time playing lacrosse and participating in several clubs and activities. Some of these activities include Model United Nations, Interact Club and cross country. She plans to attend the University of New Hampshire and major in journalism/communications next year.“I’m excited about working here and have already achieved my initial goal of covering a story for the paper,” said Homa.Intern Amanda Critelli has always had an admiration for writing and reporting; the new senior internship has given her the opportunity to make her dream a reality.“I think The Millerton News is a great fit for me because I’m able to do real-life assignments and get involved right away in my career,” she said.Critelli occupies her time by watching the news every morning, participating in the National Honors Society, and traveling across the country for club volleyball. She’s preparing to pursue Division 1 volleyball at Manhattan College next fall.“My dream job has always been to work at NBC in New York City as a journalist,” Critelli said. “Interning at The Millerton News has given me a push in the right direction.”Both students plan to make use of what they learn at The Millerton News in the future. They especially look forward to mastering their writing and the process of gathering and presenting information in a hard-hitting news fashion — skills they’ll put to use in college and ultimately, they hope, in the professional arena.
