Amenia’s Wastewater Committee sets 2024 goals

AMENIA — Focusing on a timetable for completing the required steps toward a summer application for grant funding that could support installation of a wastewater system serving the town center and its surrounds, the Wastewater Committee discussed progress at its regular meeting Thursday, Jan. 4.

The steps were reviewed by Wastewater Committee chairman Charlie Miller. An early step will be organizing site visits to wastewater facilities using the same processes as are envisioned for the local system. It is likely that residents will be invited to tag along on those site visits.

As an engineering study to define the boundaries of a wastewater district, along with preparing maps and drawings is an essential element of the grant application process, the committee saw that as an immediate goal, along with the hiring of attorneys to assist with the process. That goal was met by a resolution passed by the Town Board at its meeting later in the evening.

As a result of the Town Board’s action, the engineering firm Laberge Group of Albany, and the legal firm Tabner, Ryan and Keniry of Albany were approved to assist with the project of developing the map, plan and report, necessary to the grant application process.

Community outreach in the coming months will be a focus to inform and engage with residents, with a wastewater district expected to be determined by the summer, Miller said.

“We need a district in order to apply for a WIIA [Water Infrastructure Improvement] grant,” Miller explained. An established district map is also needed to apply for other available intermunicipal grants.

The project to test the surface water in key locations is expected to the completed with a report due in late May.

A resident attending the meeting expressed concern about plans to locate the proposed treatment facility on acreage preliminarily identified on Lake Amenia Road, citing environmental concerns. Another resident questioned the calculations that assert that eventual construction costs and operational costs can be covered by monthly user fees.

There is a scene in “The King of In Between,” a documentary about musician Garland Jeffreys, that shows his name as the answer to a question on the TV show “Jeopardy!”

“This moment was the film in a nutshell,” said Claire Jeffreys, the film’s producer and director, and Garland’s wife of 40 years. “Nobody knows the answer,” she continued. “So, you’re cool enough to be a Jeopardy question, but you’re still obscure enough that not one of the contestants even had a glimmer of the answer.”
