Amenia opens bids for stalled sidewalk project

AMENIA — Town officials are moving forward with the bidding process for a long-delayed project to install new sidewalks along Route 44 to Beekman Park.

The Town Board unanimously approved a resolution allowing officials to begin the bidding process at its regular meeting Thursday, Sept. 17.

Work on the sidewalk project was halted last winter after the former contractor, Southern Industries, failed to complete the project in a timely manner, leading the town to terminate the contract.

Preparing new bid specifications will be the first step toward hiring a contractor to complete the project.

Town officials expressed hope that the bidding process can be completed in time for work to resume this year, but acknowledged that much of the work will need to be redone.

Marriage officer appointed

In other business, the Town Board voted unanimously to appoint Town Clerk Dawn Klingner as the town’s marriage officer. The position is unpaid, but the marriage officer may charge a $75 fee to officiate a wedding.

Amenia fair connects residents with cost-saving programs

Affordability was the theme of an information fair organized by Dutchess County Representative Eric Alexander (D-25) at the Town Hall on Thursday, Sept. 17. Among the organizations on hand to answer questions was the Hudson Valley Animal Rescue of Poughkeepsie, which offers deeply discounted veterinary care. AMENIA — Elected officials, community organizations and business representatives gathered at Amenia Town Hall on Thursday, Sept. 17, for an Affordability Fair highlighting programs and discounts intended to help residents reduce household expenses.

The event was organized by Eric Alexander, D-25, Amenia’s representative in the Dutchess County Legislature. It included representatives from regional organizations and the offices of county, state and federal officials.

North East appoints Stanfordville resident Highway Superintendent

MILLERTON — North East’s Highway Superintendent position has been filled, ending a nearly six-month long vacancy, after Town Board members appointed Stanfordville resident Avery Heath.

North East Town Board members held a special meeting on Monday, Sept. 21, for the sole purpose of appointing Heath to the position. The group had previously discussed his appointment at a Thursday, Sept. 10, meeting, but could not formally vote on the appointment due to Town Clerk Tilly Strauss’s absence, Town Supervisor Chris Kennan said.

Herrington’s to open new ‘design center’ in Hillsdale

HILLSDALE — Family-owned building supply company Herrington’s will celebrate the opening of its new Kitchen, Bath and Tile Design Center at 312 White Hill Lane on Saturday, Sept. 26.

Customers can view displays of wall and floor tile, countertop surfaces and cabinetry at the new location. The company expanded into kitchen and bath design in the early 1980s, and added porcelain, ceramic, and marble tile to its offerings in 2016.

$13 million boost for Sharon Hospital

SHARON, Conn. — Sharon Hospital will receive $13.1 million in federal funding to expand care for older residents, improve access to specialists and establish an outpatient rehabilitation facility outside its campus.

Gov. Ned Lamont announced Sept. 16 that the award is part of $50 million in first-year agreements finalized by the Connecticut Department of Social Services under the Rural Health Transformation Program.
