MILLBROOK — The Town of Washington’s 2027 proposed budget would likely result in slight tax increases for residents in both the town and the Village of Millbrook. The budget will be presented at a public hearing on Thursday, Nov. 5, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Town Hall.
Mill rates for residents, which are property taxes based on assessed home value, will rise 4.87% outside the Village of Millbrook. Within the Village, the increase is only 2.97%.
The preliminary budget has a subtotal of $7,504,766 — $3,090,278 in appropriations for the general fund, $3,545,092 for highway fund, and $869,396 for the fire department.
After revenues, the 2027 budget shows appropriations of $1,163,314 for the general fund, $1,151,551 for the highway, and $869,396 for the fire department. That makes for a total tax levy of $3,184,261, up 4.85% from last year’s levy of $3,036,946.
The budget also includes an increase of $50,000 for the town library. It’s subject to voter approval, and would increase the library budget from $349,000 to $399,000.
For a Washington home with an assessed value of $266,900, taxes will increase overall by $37.74. Homes with an assessed value of $721,600 will see their taxes increase by $102.03, and a home of $2,146,300 will see an increase of $303.47.
The budget also includes a line item of $235,000 for building improvements. The Town Hall will repave its blacktop in 2027 for an estimated cost of $85,000 and replace the building’s windows for $150,000. A portion of the window replacement cost will be covered by a $25,000 grant rewarded to the town earlier in 2026.
