Community puppet shows off to a strong start

AMENIA — A series of puppet vignettes drew a crowd of all ages to the Amenia Free Library on Saturday, May 2.

As the program is designed, the Saturday performance assembled puppet vignettes presented at the library throughout April.

Youth programming assistant Michele Boynton exercises her talent and reputation for puppetry to bring stories to life for youngsters and adults alike. Listeners on Saturday were treated to an original story, titled “Daffodilly,” involving elements of spring, including the sun, bunnies and their brood, a nested robin with hatchlings, and, of course, daffodils.

Boynton creates the puppets that she uses in her storytime shows and may offer a class in puppet-making as public interest grows.

The series will continue with all-ages community puppet shows scheduled for selected Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. Each storytime in May will build around the theme of “Gardens” toward the Saturday, June 6, storytime that will tie together May’s puppet adventures, Boynton said.

An additional feature during Saturday’s program, Boynton read William Wordsworth’s “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud,” often called simply “Daffodils.”

Honeychurch Home in Lenox, Massachusetts, and DUGAZON in Sharon have been named among “The Best Home Stores in America” by House Beautiful, whose 2026 Best Home Stores issue was released Sept. 15. Honeychurch founder Carolyn Piccirelli and DUGAZON founders Bobby Graham and Matthew Marden are all Salisbury residents.

Honeychurch, which began with a small shop in Salisbury before moving to Lenox, was recognized for its carefully chosen collection of objects, textiles and home goods meant to grow more meaningful with time.

Kent Fine Art in Pine Plains presents a rare collection of drawings by Cameron Parsons Kimmel (1922-1995), the American artist, poet, actress and occultist whose work moved between surrealism, mysticism and the counterculture of the 1950s and ’60s. Known simply as Cameron, she was associated with figures including Jack Parsons, Kenneth Anger and Wallace Berman and became an influential underground avant-garde artist. The exhibition opens Friday, Sept. 25, and runs through Nov. 14 at Kent Fine Art, 2854 Church St., Pine Plains. Open Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. More information at kentfineart.net.

Amenia fair connects residents with cost-saving programs

Affordability was the theme of an information fair organized by Dutchess County Representative Eric Alexander (D-25) at the Town Hall on Thursday, Sept. 17. Among the organizations on hand to answer questions was the Hudson Valley Animal Rescue of Poughkeepsie, which offers deeply discounted veterinary care. AMENIA — Elected officials, community organizations and business representatives gathered at Amenia Town Hall on Thursday, Sept. 17, for an Affordability Fair highlighting programs and discounts intended to help residents reduce household expenses.

The event was organized by Eric Alexander, D-25, Amenia’s representative in the Dutchess County Legislature. It included representatives from regional organizations and the offices of county, state and federal officials.

North East appoints Stanfordville resident Highway Superintendent

MILLERTON — North East’s Highway Superintendent position has been filled, ending a nearly six-month long vacancy, after Town Board members appointed Stanfordville resident Avery Heath.

North East Town Board members held a special meeting on Monday, Sept. 21, for the sole purpose of appointing Heath to the position. The group had previously discussed his appointment at a Thursday, Sept. 10, meeting, but could not formally vote on the appointment due to Town Clerk Tilly Strauss’s absence, Town Supervisor Chris Kennan said.
