A new home for Stateline Auctions
D.H. Callahan
Oct 14, 2026
D.H. Callahan
If you’ve driven through North Canaan in the last month, you may have noticed that the big storefront windows at the intersection of Main and Railroad Streets, usually packed with antiques and art, are empty. Stateline Auctions has moved.
Stateline was started by Tommy Matteo and Bruce Kolbacher in 2011. Matteo had already been in the auction world for 15 years and had worked with Kalbacher, an antiques store owner, before they set up shop in North Canaan.
Matteo works as the ever-enthusiastic auctioneer, and he puts on a real show. In just a few hours, he presents and sells hundreds of items, from antique furniture and rugs to art and decorative items, even taxidermy, jewelry and other odds and ends you probably wouldn’t expect. Community is part of the show, with Matteo joking around with regulars. Attendees congratulate each other on their purchases, and even educate each other about the items as matteo keeps the momentum going. If items aren’t moving, Matteo will remind the room that he’s got alimony to pay, and it’s up to everybody in the room to help him raise the funds.
For the past 15 years, this has all happened in that highly visible building at the main intersection in North Canaan. Now, Mattea, Kolbacher and their Stateline Auctions crew have moved off the beaten path. For some frugal bidders, this might seem like a good thing. After all, the fewer people who know about the auction, the fewer people they have to bid against when their lots come up.

Unfortunately for those who consistently show up, the competition these days is less in the room and more online. Stateline has been running simultaneous auctions through the real-time auction website and app LiveAuctioneers.com, where the entire event is streamed live. Throughout the eight-hour event, the online viewership rarely, if ever, dips below 600 individual users. This technological development creates more potential buyers for Stateline and also allows busy bidders to keep an eye on their lots while out and about.
The new space, still in North Canaan, just barely south of the Massachusetts border, is a sizable warehouse packed to the ceiling with precious finds. It’s bigger, brighter and has ample parking.
The auction on Oct. 11 featured all kinds of lots, including three cars. A candy-apple-red Crosley pickup truck grabbed every eye in the room and even more attention online. Amid all the enthusiasm, it was heartwarming to witness the entire audience erupt in applause as young bidder Molly Seitz burst into tears after winning the truck. The beautiful vintage vehicle had belonged to her grandfather, who had given her driving lessons in it before he died.
Between resellers, collectors and the casually curious, the performance that is a Sunday at Stateline Auctions is a delightful way to breathe new life into old items. There’s rarely a set date for the next auction, but it generally takes about six weeks before they’re ready with their next round of goods. This time, Matteo predicts a sale after Thanksgiving, but if you want to be safe, follow their auction on liveauctioneers.com.

Lena Dunham is feeling “Famesick” in Cornwall
D.H. Callahan
Oct 14, 2026
Lena Dunham in conversation with Robert Becker in Cornwall.
D.H. Callahan
Lena Dunham is an unstoppable creative force. She’s been releasing critically acclaimed projects since graduating from Oberlin College in Ohio in 2008. Her new memoir, “Famesick,” about her career, success and the unexpected side effects that accompanied her rise to household-name status, is yet another critical darling.
On Saturday, Oct. 10, Dunham sat down with writer Robert Becker to discuss the book in front of a packed house at the Cornwall Congregational Church in Cornwall Village. The event was sponsored by the Cornwall Library, which, due to unprecedented demand, chose the church as the venue in order to fit more members of the curious community.
Dunham, whose parents are local in the Cornwall area, is settling into town, splitting time between the Northwest Corner and London with her husband, musician Luis Felber, and their first child, a baby girl. Due to her new role as mother, Dunham has not spent much time promoting “Famesick” in person. Despite her lack of public appearances, the book has topped the New York Times bestseller list at No. 1.
Becker boasts a storied résumé himself, with stints at The Paris Review and Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine. There was an intimate, natural feel to their rapport, grabbing and retaining the attention of everyone in attendance, from millennials to baby boomers, along with a few recognizable celebrities who blended right in with the local population. Both writers landed off-the-cuff jokes with expert timing, often drawing uproarious laughter and applause. The hourlong event felt casually effortless, funny, honest and sincere
Among other topics, they talked about Dunham’s career and family, writer’s block, fame, health, sobriety, communism and the art of filmmaking. Dunham also offered a thoughtful reflection on her generational-defining HBO series, “Girls,” which she admitted she has not revisited since the show’s finale nine years ago. She showed appreciation for the unique circumstances surrounding her artistic rise, regaling the audience stories of producer Judd Apatow going to bat for her ideas and explaining to her that things don’t usually work out so well for young artists.
By her own account, Dunham watches a lot of TV and realizes that a show with a premise as loose as “Girls’” would have a hard time getting made today. It’s “four friends, they’re having some issues, they’re not even really friends, they don’t really like each other, they’re mean to each other, and to other people. That’s the story.”
She went on to suggest, “There’s no way that ‘Girls’ would be greenlit today because now, virtually every show has to be like: she’s a girl … but she’s a ghost … also she’s a lawyer.”
After the talk, the delighted audience strolled across the Cornwall Village green to the library, where a book signing and reception kept everyone in good spirits long after dark.
“Famesick” is available now wherever books are sold.

A new chapter for Oblong Books and Stissing Center
Natalia Zukerman
Oct 14, 2026
Murray Hill and Bridget Everett shared the stage at Stissing Center in Pine Plains on Thursday, Oct. 8, for an evening celebrating Hill’s new memoir and the launch of a literary partnership between Oblong Books and Stissing Center.
Natalia Zukerman
When Oblong Books co-owner Suzanna Hermans ran into comedian Murray Hill in New York City, she saw an opportunity.
Hill, the self-described “hardest-working middle-aged man in show business,” had a new memoir, “Showbiz! My Life as a Middle-Aged Man,” coming out, and Hermans was eager to bring him to the Hudson Valley for an author event.
She approached him and suggested a visit to “an independent bookstore in the Hudson Valley.” Hill asked where the bookstore was located.
“Millerton,” Hermans replied.
“Oh my God, Oblong?” Hill exclaimed.
As it turned out, Hill already knew of Oblong with its locations in Millerton and Rhinebeck. His friendship with actor and comedian Bridget Everett had brought him to the region, and he had visited the shop before.
“It was a marriage made in heaven,” said Helen Seslowsky, Oblong’s events director.
The chance encounter led to an evening of laughter, storytelling and an exuberant conversation between Hill and Everett on Thursday, Oct. 8, at Stissing Center in Pine Plains.
The event also marked the beginning of a promising collaboration between Oblong Books and Stissing Center, bringing together two regional cultural institutions with a shared interest in connecting artists and audiences.
For Seslowsky, the partnership has been a long time coming.
“One of the things that we really were missing was a midsize venue for author events for Oblong,” she said.
The bookstore has long hosted literary events at its Rhinebeck location, which can accommodate about 50 people, and at The White Hart Inn in Salisbury, where audiences of roughly 100 can gather. But a venue that could accommodate larger crowds while retaining an intimate atmosphere had remained elusive.
Seslowsky had been discussing the possibilities at Stissing Center with Executive Director Patrick Trettenero for some time, waiting for the right opportunity to emerge as the venue’s renovations progressed.
“It’s just taken until now for something that really was a good fit to pop up,” she said.
That something turned out to be Murray Hill.
“It came about quite by chance and was a perfect fit,” Seslowsky said. “We couldn’t have wished for better.”
The conversation between Hill and Everett, long-time friends and co-stars in the acclaimed HBO series “Somebody Somewhere,” brought a lively mix of show business stories, friendship and irreverent humor to Banning Hall, The Stissing Center’s upstairs performance space.
The evening also demonstrated how well the theater could accommodate literary programming. Although the event was initially considered for The Grace Note, the center’s intimate downstairs performance space, Banning Hall offered the seating capacity and sightlines needed for a larger audience without sacrificing a sense of closeness.
Seslowsky said the experience opened up possibilities for future events in both rooms.
“Now we know how it works,” she said. “Banning Hall is such a great, very versatile space to have. And then we’ve got the coziness of The Grace Note.”
Geography is another advantage. Pine Plains sits conveniently between Oblong’s two bookstores, making Stissing Center a natural gathering place for readers from both sides of the Hudson Valley and the Northwest Corner.
The collaboration also introduces audiences to cultural offerings they might not otherwise discover.
Seslowsky noticed familiar faces from Oblong and The Moviehouse in Millerton, along with patrons of Stissing Center and people she hadn’t encountered before.
That kind of audience sharing is central to the partnership’s appeal. A reader who arrives for an author conversation might return for a concert or theatrical performance, while regular Stissing Center patrons may discover a new favorite author or bookstore.
The financial arrangement is similarly collaborative. For the Murray Hill event, the ticket price included a copy of the book. Oblong handled the book purchases, author arrangements and promotion, while The Stissing Center supplied the venue, technical staff and volunteers. The partners shared the proceeds.
“We do all our end of it and the promotion, and Stissing Center has their volunteers and Patrick and the tech staff,” Seslowsky explained. “And then we just split whatever we make.”
While no additional jointly produced events have been announced, Seslowsky is already looking ahead to the spring publishing season. She is reviewing publishers’ catalogs, identifying authors with forthcoming books and submitting requests for potential appearances.
“We’ve got a lot of irons in the fire,” she said.
She expects the next round of programming to take shape after the holiday season, with events potentially beginning in February, March and April.
The timing of the first collaboration, she believes, was particularly fortunate. With Stissing Center’s renovations nearing completion and both organizations eager to expand their reach, the right event arrived at the right moment.
“I don’t believe in pushing things or trying to make things happen before they’re organically ready to do so,” Seslowsky said. “I just think things fell into place. The timing was perfect.”
And if the Murray Hill evening offered any indication of what’s possible, the partnership has plenty of room to grow.
“When we pool our collective resources, it always ends up being a better event,” Seslowsky said.
